Plein Air Paintings to Be Exhibited at Open Studio on Monhegan Island

Good Morning, Friends!

Beginning on Saturday 12 July, I will be exhibiting a number of plein air paintings that were done over the years on location on Monhegan Island, Maine. These works will be shown in my open studio on Fish Beach Road on the Island. If you're in the mid-coast area in July, hop on a boat out of one of three ports--Port Clyde, New Harbor, or Boothbay Harbor--and visit us out on The Rock!

Here is a sampling of some of the plein air paintings...

The Open Studio:
As you may or may not know, Katharine Krieg (see www.katharinekrieg.com) and I will be sharing a studio on Fish Beach Road on Monhegan Island this summer. The studio will be open to the public daily from 12:00 noon until 3:00pm or by chance or by appointment. The dates of the open studio will be from Saturday 12 July until Friday 01 August 2014. If you are on the Island, please stop by and say hello; we'd love to chat with you. Both Katy and I will be out painting at various locations around the Island as well as in the studio.

Evening Receptions:
Looking for something to do during the evening hours? Watch for our announcements on the Island Rope Shed and on the Freight Shed on the dock as we will be having a couple of evening wine and cheese receptions in the studio. We look forward to meeting you and sharing stories of Monhegan!

Workshop:
Katharine Krieg will also be offering a three-day workshop on Monhegan on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 21-23 July.

Here is what Katy has to say about her workshop:
"This 3 day plein air workshop is about what goes into laying the groundwork, or armature, for a successful painting. Design, composition, value, shape placement, limited color palettes, and keeping things simple will be the focus throughout the 3 days. After a short demo in the morning, students will create paintings using knowledge discussed from the morning demo. Watercolor and oil mediums will be used although drawing will be demonstrated for creating field sketches. Group is kept small for individual attention."

Additional information is included in Katy's blog at www.katharinekrieg.blogspot.com.

There are still a couple of spots open. If you're interested, contact her through her web site at www.katharinekrieg.com for further information or to sign up. I'm sure that an informative and fun time will be had for all!

In Conclusion:
Look for us on Island during the month of July!
All for now. Until next time...

Trip to Massachusetts and Connecticut

Good Morning, Friends!

Katy and I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Massachusetts and Connecticut. We did a lot of sightseeing and gathered a ton of information for future painting reference. Highlights included Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts and Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. In Connecticut, we also met up with the tall ship Amistad at her home port in New Haven.

Old Sturbridge Village is a recreated living community depicting rural and village life in New England in the 1830's. We had a wonderful time speaking with the numerous costumed historic interpreters.

Mystic Seaport is a recreated 1800's fishing community. On our visit to Mystic last August, we didn't spend nearly enough time exploring, so we returned for our second visit in under a year! This time, our visit was much more relaxed, and we were able to spend an entire day exploring.

While in Connecticut, we picked up Katy's daughter, who is a crew member on the tall ship Amistad. The

Amistad had just arrived in its home port of New Haven after sailing south from Nova Scotia and visiting numerous ports along the way including Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, and Portland. We had a wonderful time on the ship. Thanks to the crew for their hospitality and engaging conversation! Another highlight was dinner at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale restaurant, located on the water in New Haven. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the following night for yet another fine meal!

All for now. We are home for a week and a half; then its off to Monhegan Island!

Until next time...

Monhegan Island Quadricentennial

Hello Friends!

I am pleased to announce that my painting "End of the Season" has been selected for inclusion in the Monhegan Island Quadricentennial art exhibition. The painting depicts the lightkeeper's house, located on Lighthouse Hill, one of the highest places on the Island. I am drawn again and again to the keeper's house, with its white clapboard siding and complex array of red roofs.

This invitational exhibition will feature works by contemporary artists who have a deep commitment to Island life. The show, which will run from 28 July through 09 August 2014, will be spread over three Island venues--The Island Inn, The Monhegan House, and The Trailing Yew.

The recognition of the Quadricentennial will commence on 05 August 2014 with with an art exhibition at the Monhegan Museum that recreates an exhibition organized as part of the Tercentenary festivities in 1914, followed by a parade, speeches, and music, and culminating with a formal ball and fireworks show on 06 August.

The Monhegan Plantation's celebration commemorates Captain John Smith's visit to the Island in 1614.
