Celebration of Art in School

Greetings:

Last week, I was honored to be invited to show my work along with the works of Walter E. Baum (1884-1956), Melville Stark (1904-1987, a student of Baum's) and two sculptors. The exhibition was held at the Perkiomen School, an independent college preparatory boarding and day school located in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania in partnership with the James A. Michener Art Museum. The purpose of the exhibition was to celebrate art in schools, following Baum's personal mission to ensure that art had place in schools. Baum's works were exhibited in Carnegie Library on the Perkiomen School campus seventy years ago and a half dozen or so of his works remain in the school's collection. The opening reception was held on Friday evening and I thank all of you that came out in support of the continuation of Baum's mission.

Additionally, I was delighted to do a lecture / demonstration on Tuesday evening during which I discussed the techniques of drybrush as well as other aspects of life as an artist. The demonstration was well-attended and I thank all those who came out and especially those who actively participated with questions and comments.

Katy also did a lecture / demonstration last week, hers being at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown, Pennsylvania.

Looking ahead, we are both hoping to spend some quality time in the studio now that the temperatures are cooling down and outdoor work is slowing down.

Always remember that the Hendershot & Krieg Studio in Hoppenville is open to the public by appointment; feel free to check in with an e-mail or phone call and stop by to see what's happening!

Until next time...

Thoughts from the Summer and Early Fall

Greetings from Hendershot & Krieg Studio, Hoppenville, Pennsylvania:

We hope that you had a wonderful and fulfilling summer. The beginning of fall found us finishing up another successful open studio/gallery on Monhegan Island, Maine. One of the highlights of our year is our annual trek north and reconnecting with dear friends and meeting new people to share stories and experiences. We are grateful for all of the new “adoptions” of our work into collections and homes across the United States and abroad. It is always amazing how such a small island can attract visitors from such a wide geographic area. This year, we were delighted to see a collector take one of our pieces to Zanzibar with him! Monhegan was as inspiring as ever and we both painted like crazy. Thanks to the beautiful weather, we painted ourselves silly and plein air paintings were coming off the easel daily. We had a really great time on Island and plans have been made for next year. Make your plans early and visit us in our island studio/gallery on Fish Beach Road next summer.

Late August and early September found us frantically putting the finishing touches on yet another two-person exhibition. “Times and Places” was be hosted by Patricia Hutton Galleries of Doylestown, Pennsylvania from September 16 through October 15. The pieces in this exhibition reflected the full range of our work from Monhegan Island to Pennsylvania, from still life to landscape, seascape, and beyond. Thanks to all who stopped by the opening reception or over the course of the exhibition.

Additionally, Katharine was honored to be invited as a guest speaker at the Meet the Artist program at Delaware Valley University in Doylestown in October.

Looking ahead, we are enjoying a spectacular display of fall foliage here in Pennsylvania where we are shameless leaf-peepers!

We’re hoping that this newsletter finds you well! Thank you for all the continued support and encouragement for our work.

Best Wishes,
Brad and Katy

Monhegan Island Open Studio/Gallery 2015

Hello, Friends!

I am excited to say that we are less than a week away from opening our studio/gallery on Monhegan Island, Maine! Throughout this post, you'll see several new paintings that will be exhibited in the studio this summer.

The Open Studio:
Katharine Krieg (see www.katharinekrieg.com) and I will be opening our studio/gallery on Fish Beach Road on Monhegan Island on Saturday 04 July 2015. The studio will be open to the public daily from 12:00 noon until 3:00pm or by chance or by appointment. The dates of the open studio will continue through Friday 31 July. If you are on the Island, please stop by and say hello; we'd love to chat with you. Both Katy and I will be out painting at various locations around the Island as well as in the studio.

Workshop:
Katharine Krieg will also be offering a three-day workshop on Monhegan on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, 13-15 July.

Here is what Katy has to say about her workshop:
"This 3 day plein air workshop is about what goes into laying the groundwork, or armature, for a successful painting. Design, composition, value, shape placement, limited color palettes, and keeping things simple will be the focus throughout the 3 days. After a short demo in the morning, students will create paintings using knowledge discussed from the morning demo. Watercolor and oil mediums will be used although drawing will be demonstrated for creating field sketches. Group is kept small for individual attention."

Additional information is included in Katy's blog at www.katharinekrieg.blogspot.com.

There are still spots open. If you're interested, contact her through her web site at www.katharinekrieg.com for further information or to sign up. As in the past, I'm sure that an informative and fun time will be had for all!

In Conclusion:
Look for us on Island during the month of July!

"A New England Summer"

I am pleased to have my work included in the upcoming exhibition entitled "A New England Summer" at Patricia Hutton Galleries in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. The opening reception will be on Saturday 20 June 2015 from 5:00 until 8:00pm. I hope to see you there!

Here's what Patricia Hutton posts on her Facebook page: "For many years Bradley Hendershot has spent his summers on Monhegan Island. Like the legendary artists who proceeded him, he records the history of the village... dwellings and the rugged natural beauty of this remote island off the coast of Maine. Come meet Brad at our opening reception and learn the intriguing story behind this dry brush painting entitled "Island Rental." Join us at an Opening Reception for "A New England Summer" on June 20, 5 -8 pm."

Here’s a statement that I wrote several years ago about the house in this painting:

“From the first time I ever got off of a boat on Monhegan Island, I have been intrigued by the large, rambling, old house that sits atop Wharf Hill overlooking the harbor. You can see it’s present owner, sitting on the knoll most summer afternoons, at the top of Wharf Hill, watching the events in the harbor. Known officially as the John Sterling House, it is one of the oldest houses on Monhegan, dating to 1809. It is in disrepair—boards falling off, dark and looming. To me, it conjures up images of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s House of the Seven Gables, and Stephen King’s Marsten House (in ‘salem’s Lot). I have never been in the house—maybe it’s best that I don’t go in; maybe it would take all of my feelings away, when I saw that it was just an ordinary house inside instead of the haunted house I’ve imagined.”

Well, in the summer of 2006, I went into the house, as the owner, then in her 90’s, had moved off-island. The house had been fixed up, with new roof, new windows, and new clapboard siding. It’s now divided into two halves, each one a rental unit. I decided to do this drybrush of the front façade as it was before repairs, and for some reason I’ve placed a placard above the door with my initials, “BJH”, carved into it. This must’ve been some sort of sign, as several weeks later, I decided to move from my Monhegan home of a dozen years and rent the right-hand half of this house, now called the John Sterling Harbor House, beginning in Summer of 2008. My front door was none other than the door over which I placed the initialed placard! I have since moved again, and now share a studio/gallery on Fish Beach Road with artist Katharine Krieg.

“No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”
    Shirley Jackson
    The Haunting of Hill House

Here is another Monhegan Island painting that will be included in the exhibition:

    FOG WALK
    watercolour, 18 x 29-1/4
    signed lower right

John Sterling’s Cistern House, also known as Uncle Henry’s, was built on Monhegan Island around 1815. Originally known as the Cistern House, as it protected a water supply, it became known as Uncle Henry’s in the 1930’s when Henry Shaw used it as a place from which to sell his fresh produce and milk, which he brought to the Island once or twice a week. The painting depicts Uncle Henry’s in the fog, as a woman walks down Wharf Hill on her way to greet the morning boat from the mainland. An American flag on the upper deck gently waves in the breeze.

    All for now,
    Until next time,
    Brad

I discovered this building one day in late 2001; it is part of the Haines Brothers mill complex near Dorneyville, Pennsylvania. The building has the distinction of being the first schoolhouse in Pennsylvania outside of the city of Philadelphia. The schoolroom actually was on the second floor; the schoolteacher lived in the building and reached her quarters by climbing a ladder to the attic area beneath the gable. The first floor served as a springhouse. Upon close examination of the building, one can see slots in the walls, which served as rifle ports used to ward off attacking Indians. I was most interested in the heart-shaped metal sculpture hanging on the outside wall. This inspired the title of the painting, VALENTINE’S DAY.

THE DISCOVERY
Oil on Canvas, 20 x 27 inches

Artists Katharine Krieg and Bradley Hendershot are pleased to announce a two-person exhibition entitled Viewpoints. The show will be held in the Lincoln Building located at Historic Yellow Springs in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania from September 12 through 21, 2014, with the opening reception being held on Friday September 12.

Although both Katy and Brad are attracted to similar subjects and paint in a realistic style, they tend to see things from different viewpoints, hence the title of the exhibition. Katy and Brad have both exhibited in the popular annual Yellow Springs group show for many years, but this will be the first time the two have shown a large body of work in the gallery.

The artists will be present and painting on location in the gallery on both Saturdays and Sundays, September 13 and 14, and September 20 and 21. This is wonderful informal opportunity for the public to chat with the artists about their process as they share their most recent paintings in the works.

Katharine Krieg (b. 1970) is a traditional realist artist working in the mediums of watercolor, oil and charcoal. Inspired by her surroundings, she feels her paintings are her answers to what she observes. A quiet sense of Introspection and the passing of Time are themes that recur in her works of still life and landscape.

After earning a degree in art education, she continued her training through the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and Chester Springs Studio as well as private instruction in the studio of Carlo Russo.

Katharine maintains a studio in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania and holds an annual open studio on Monhegan Island, Maine each summer, where she also teaches plein air workshops. She is honored to have been accepted into national as well as regional open juried shows and invitational shows. She is a signature member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society and has been a juror for the Philadelphia Sketch Club.

Bradley Hendershot (b.1958) is a contemporary American representational artist, working mostly in the water media. Brad paints with an intense devotion to realistic detail while at the same time employing artistic license for the sake of composition and to evoke a certain feeling or mood in the viewer. Using creativity in the overall planning of a work, Brad emphasizes the features and details that best capture and produce the desired effect or emotion.
Bradley is primarily a painter of coastal Maine and rural Pennsylvania – regions that he knows well, regions that have special meaning to him.

“My Pennsylvania paintings depict the rural community and a way of life that is quickly fading into the past. Many of the timber and stone barns and mills, the houses and outbuildings, which are part of the Pennsylvania heritage, are rapidly disappearing. I’d like to feel, in a way, that I have preserved them in my paintings.”

“In Maine, I paint the rugged shoreline of the mid-coast region and Monhegan Island where I enjoy the smell of salt air and the feeling of sea spray. I've always loved the sea, probably a combination of things –the boats, the energy of the surf, the rocks, the storms and the romance of it all. I hope this comes across in my paintings of the weathered clapboard lobster shanties and the granite towers of the lighthouses.”

Bradley’s Pennsylvania studio is located in rural Upper Hanover Township in Montgomery County. He also holds an annual open studio on Monhegan Island, Maine each summer, where he also teaches plein air workshops. Brad is a signature member of American Society of Marine Artists, a Signature Professional Artist of International Society of Marine Painters, a Signature Member of Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and a Signature Member of Philadelphia Watercolor Society.

Return from Monhegan Island

We're back from Monhegan Island and finally have the Pennsylvania studio up and running! Upon our return, there was a great deal of unpacking, data entry and tax accounting, and shipping out of paintings and prints. So, I'm finally getting around to writing a little bit about the summer.

This year marked my 20th year on Monhegan and Monhegan's quadricentennial (meaning 400 years since Captain John Smith landed on Island in 1614).

It was a fantastic summer, highlighted by beautiful weather, sea salt, ocean spray, lobster, wonderful friends, the open studio, and, of course, plenty of painting. Many thanks to Katharine Krieg (www.katharinekrieg.com) for sharing the studio with me and making Monhegan extra special. Thanks also to our many Monhegan friends for joining us at breakfasts, dinners, parties, or just for a mug-up in the studio or ice cream in the evening. And, to all of the people we met on Island or in the open studio--whether you are a long-time Monhegan person or a first-time day-tripper--thanks for the wonderful chats. It was a pleasure to meet all of you and we really enjoyed exchanging Island stories.

The open studio was a huge success. Katy and I were known to be constantly bantering to the amusement of many first-time visitors and Island regulars alike--gotta keep it interesting! Thanks to those of you who dropped by the studio on a daily basis to sit and enjoy a Moxie with us. The open studio allowed for the display of about thirty paintings gallery-style. In addition, visitors were able to learn more about the painting process itself from the numerous unfinished works strewn about the studio as well as being able to watch us paint and describe our most recent work. We had two evening wine and cheese receptions that were very well received and we thank all of you who came out to the studio.

For those of you who follow me on Facebook, I hope that you enjoyed my posts from the Island. This year was the first time that I attempted shooting video on Island, and hopefully some of you who have not been out to Monhegan were able to get some sense of what life is like twelve miles out to sea on one of Maine's wildest islands. I also posted, on Facebook, a video tour of our studio and some still shots of works in progress. And, of course, personal experiences from Katy's lobster dinner to the early morning retrieval of a paper wasp nest from under a porch were shared as well.

Both Katharine and I have been asked to do painting workshops on Monhegan next summer. In addition to the 3-day workshop that Katy taught this year and will be doing again next year, she will be doing an additional plein air workshop for oil painting. My workshop next year will be in watercolour. Specifics, including dates, will be posted in an upcoming blog, on my website, and on Facebook, or you can e-mail me with questions and I will answer everything that I can as we develop the programs.

Finally, many paintings were "adopted" into fine homes and I thank all of my collectors, both repeat and new, for their enthusiasm and support. I hope that you enjoy your pieces. Please keep in touch.

And, in conclusion, below are images of some of the paintings that I did while on Island.

Trip to Massachusetts and Connecticut

Good Morning, Friends!

Katy and I have just returned from a wonderful trip to Massachusetts and Connecticut. We did a lot of sightseeing and gathered a ton of information for future painting reference. Highlights included Old Sturbridge Village in Massachusetts and Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. In Connecticut, we also met up with the tall ship Amistad at her home port in New Haven.

Old Sturbridge Village is a recreated living community depicting rural and village life in New England in the 1830's. We had a wonderful time speaking with the numerous costumed historic interpreters.

Mystic Seaport is a recreated 1800's fishing community. On our visit to Mystic last August, we didn't spend nearly enough time exploring, so we returned for our second visit in under a year! This time, our visit was much more relaxed, and we were able to spend an entire day exploring.

While in Connecticut, we picked up Katy's daughter, who is a crew member on the tall ship Amistad. The

Amistad had just arrived in its home port of New Haven after sailing south from Nova Scotia and visiting numerous ports along the way including Rockland, Boothbay Harbor, and Portland. We had a wonderful time on the ship. Thanks to the crew for their hospitality and engaging conversation! Another highlight was dinner at Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale restaurant, located on the water in New Haven. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the following night for yet another fine meal!

All for now. We are home for a week and a half; then its off to Monhegan Island!

Until next time...

Monhegan Island Quadricentennial

Hello Friends!

I am pleased to announce that my painting "End of the Season" has been selected for inclusion in the Monhegan Island Quadricentennial art exhibition. The painting depicts the lightkeeper's house, located on Lighthouse Hill, one of the highest places on the Island. I am drawn again and again to the keeper's house, with its white clapboard siding and complex array of red roofs.

This invitational exhibition will feature works by contemporary artists who have a deep commitment to Island life. The show, which will run from 28 July through 09 August 2014, will be spread over three Island venues--The Island Inn, The Monhegan House, and The Trailing Yew.

The recognition of the Quadricentennial will commence on 05 August 2014 with with an art exhibition at the Monhegan Museum that recreates an exhibition organized as part of the Tercentenary festivities in 1914, followed by a parade, speeches, and music, and culminating with a formal ball and fireworks show on 06 August.

The Monhegan Plantation's celebration commemorates Captain John Smith's visit to the Island in 1614.

I thank Patricia Hutton for her most recent sales, including "Mud Run" and "Crab Baskets and Oars".

Maine in the Winter

Good Morning, Friends!

Katy and I just got back from a wonderful trip to Maine. We not only met up with dear Monhegan Island friends, but did a little work as well--gathering information for future paintings. We were blessed with beautiful weather while we were there and we were able to experience Maine in winter without ending up in the hospital with frostbite!

Thank you to John and Winnie for coming in from Monhegan and to Al and Betsey for coming in from New Hampshire. A special thank you to Carroll and Mary Jane for putting us up (and for putting up with us!) in Kittery Point! You are all dear friends and we look forward to seeing you soon on Monhegan!

Highlights of the trip included Cape Neddick (Nubble) Light in York and Fort McClary in Kittery Point. We also enjoyed tromping around the old seaside cemetery at the First Congregational Church in Kittery Point. A fine time was had by all in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as we met up at the Banks Gallery and made our way to the British Beer Company Pub and Eatery for dinner. And, of course, the tradition continues--breakfast and lunch at Rick's in York! Thanks also to Mary Jane for the wonderful dinner and blueberry pie!

Ah, Maine in winter with friends...

Brad at the Nubble--it doesn't get any better than this!

Welcome to My Blog

Welcome, friends, to my new blog. This is where I will post the latest happenings in and around the studio. I hope that you will join me in my journey...

I'll start us off by looking at a painting that is very indicative of the cold and snowy winter that we're having here in Pennsylvania.
